There was less trash today.

We notified the police that tire tracks were found in the area restricted for the piping plovers.  The police were very accomodating!  Thank you Southampton Village Police!

Picking up trash helps endangered species

Near the house there is a piping plover nest.  Earlier this week people were putting up additional fencing, because the eggs were about to hatch.  The plover is endangered, and they don’t want cars crushing the babies.  They walk to get food – the mother doesn’t bring it back to them – and after about a month they can fly.  I mentioned that I picked up trash, and the environmental scientist told me that that’s a good thing; trash attracts predators.  But there are still so many – feral cats, foxes, raccoons and more – I hope those little birdies make it.  Two hatched this morning – they are adorable.

Lots of candy and snack wrappers today, which begs the question - what are we putting in our own stomachs?

Educate yourself about balloons!

Please visit http://realmama.org/archives-earth/07_spr_balloons.php for information about how harmful balloons are to the environment!

Note - putting a coffee cup behind the fence near the trash can doesn't mean you threw it away
